Rodent Identification & Prevention
What are rodents?
Rodents are mammals that live successfully worldwide, both with and without the help of people. The mouse and rat are two of the most common rodent types that live close to people, and these pests commonly invade our structures.
We identify rats by their long, scaly, hairless tails. Mice only grow a few inches long, compared to rats, which can grow up to 12 inches. Mice have velvety fur covering their short ears and long tails. Like all rodents, mice and rats have continuously growing front incisors. To prevent their teeth from overgrowing, they constantly chew on anything they can wrap their mouth around, including wires, cables, PVC pipes, drywall, and furniture.
Are rodents dangerous?
Rodents are dangerous pests. In addition to the destruction rodents cause with their teeth, rodents spread human pathogens, parasites, and allergens. They pose significant health risks and trigger allergies.
The longer rodents are on your property, the bigger their population will become and the more damage they will cause. Rodents are a serious threat to health and property. At Mike's Pest, Termite and Wildlife Control, we understand how serious a rodent infestation is and our rodent control in Waldorf will help you keep these dangerous pests away from your property and family.
Why do I have a rodent problem?
Rodents are driven to our properties by the promise of food, water, and shelter. Things found in most of our yards that will catch the attention of rodents include bird feeders, trash cans, compost piles, gardens, outdoor eating areas, and harborage spots. Tall grass, woodpiles, yard debris, garages, and sheds offer rodents a safe place to call home.
When rodent populations are high, harsh weather conditions are present, or there is a lack of food; rodents won't hesitate to seek relief in our homes. Most rodents are agile and can find their way into our home by climbing into and crawling through gaps in the foundation, vents, drains, and openings around windows and doors. Chimneys and holes along the roof line are other common entry points
Where will I find rodents?
Rats and mice compete for resources, so they typically won't invade the same property simultaneously. Whether it's mice or rats that have found their way into your house, you must take immediate action because rodents multiply quickly.
Rodents in Maryland are active year-round and can find their way into our homes at any time of the year. In our region, they tend to be especially problematic in the late fall and early winter when our temperatures are at their lowest, and there are fewer places outside to forage for food.
Some of the most common places to find nesting rats and mice inside our homes include wall voids, chimneys, the backs of cabinets and closets, and behind large appliances or pieces of furniture.
